Authors' guidelines for Ultraschall in der Medizin / European Journal of Ultrasound

The UiM/EJU-specific guidelines are listed here (PDF-Icon)

Ultraschall in der Medizin / European Journal of Ultrasound publishes scientific papers and contributions from a variety of disciplines on the diagnostic and therapeutic applications of ultrasound with an emphasis on clinical application. Technical papers with a physiological theme as well as the interaction between ultrasound and biological systems might also occasionally be considered for peer review and publication, provided that the translational relevance is high and the link with clinical applications is tight. The editors and the publisher reserve the right to publish selected articles online only. Authors are welcome to submit supplementary video material. Letters and comments are also accepted, promoting a vivid exchange of opinions and scientific discussions.

All articles submitted to the European Journal of Ultrasound undergo rigorous peer review. With web-based manuscript submission and expedited turn-around, rapid electronic and print publication is guaranteed.

Publication language is English.

General guidelines for authors

In addition to the specific author guidelines for Ultraschall in der Medizin / European Journal of Ultrasound, please note the following general author guidelines:

If you are working with citation management software (Endnote, Zotero, Mendeley), please use the output style "Thieme-English". It is available in the relevant software or can be downloaded here.

Figures

Unfortunately, we cannot accept images that have already been published in books, journals, or electronic products of other publishers. That is because it is almost impossible to obtain the necessary rights of use even when licensing fees are paid. Therefore, please do not pay any licensing fees (e.g. to "RightsLink" / Copyright Clearance Center). Standard license contracts from "Creative Commons" are unfortunately also insufficient for our purposes. Please contact us if you have any questions regarding the use of images.

We cannot accept or store illustrations that include personal data of third parties. Please submit only images in a completely anonymous form, free of all personal data. This refers not only to data directly visible in the image (e.g., a patient name or a date of birth on an X-ray image) but also to information included in the metadata of the image that is accessible with the appropriate software. It includes data that may have been obscured by a cropping feature (such as in PowerPoint or Word) but can still be made visible. If you have questions about data protection regulations, please contact us before submitting your manuscript.

File format and general requirements

Please submit your files in the following forms:

  • Text and tables: MS Word (*.doc, *.docx)
  • Figures: Each figure as a separate image file (*.jpg, *.tif, *.png); MS Word and PowerPoint can also be used for drawings and graphics. Minimum resolution: 300 dpi with a width of 8.5 cm (1000 pixel width)
  • Videos: Preferred file format *.mp4, *.avi or *.mov; file size maximum 5 MB per video
  • Audio files: Preferred file format *.wav

In addition:

  • Text may contain headings of up to three levels.
  • Boxes: Please always provide a title

Forms

Please indicate possible conflicts of interest by downloading, completing and sending the following signed form to the publisher:

The personal rights of people who are recognizable on images must be protected. Please provide a written consent form for publication signed by every recognizable person. For persons under 18 years of age/supervised persons, please provide the signature of both parents/the legal guardian/supervisor. A suitable declaration of consent form can be obtained in our authors' lounge.

Publication of manuscripts immediately upon acceptance

UIM/EJU offers its authors the option to have their manuscripts published immediately upon acceptance (if the publication preference Open Access is chosen, the manuscript gets published only after receipt of the APC). This means that the unedited, unformatted version of the manuscript as it stands after peer review is published online, with a DOI. Authors wishing to make use of this service will be asked to upload a "clean" (i.e., without any highlighted track changes or comments) and not anonymized version of their manuscripts after every revision; this is a precondition for this service, as is the confirmation that the Copyright Transfer Agreement (CTA) will be signed upon receipt. This service is offered for Case Report, Pictorial Essay, Original Article, Review, Quality Assurance, Letter to the Editor, Technical Development, Rapid Communication and Guidelines & Recommendations.

Implications of "accepted manuscript" publication: Once the paper has been accepted, the last clean version of the manuscript, including all metadata entered during submission (title, abstract, author affiliations etc.), becomes the first version of the article to be published online. This means that no changes can be made to the submitted clean version as this version will be published as the "Accepted Manuscript", should it be accepted. Changes by the authors will only be possible subsequently in the proofs from the typesetters for correction. This means in detail:

  •  For all authors, the affiliation information entered during submission will be published.
  • If an author is already in the system, please use "Edit" to update the address information if necessary.
  • To facilitate the entry of co-author information, please use the "Quick Fill" option if applicable.
  • The order of authors entered during submission will be the order of authors on the "Accepted Manuscript".
  • All authors named under step "Authors & Institutions" agree to the publication and signing of the CTA.
  • The conflict of interest and funding information will be published as entered at the step "Details & Comments".
  • Clinical trial information will be published as entered at the step "Details & Comments".

Instructions and further information are available during the submission process and upon request to the Editorial Office.

Author's correction, imprimatur, specimen copy

The corresponding author will receive the galley proofs as a PDF file. He/she is fully responsible for the correctness of the final version that he/she releases for publication. Once the copyright transfer agreement has been submitted, changes by the authors are no longer possible.

After publication, the corresponding authors will receive a free electronic reprint (PDF file). They may use this file for professional exchange with colleagues and may upload the file to their personal homepage. Please note that all further use of this PDF is subject to approval by the publisher. In particular, any commercial use or deposition of the file in repositories (e.g. document servers of libraries and other institutions) is prohibited.
